Cesar Azpilicueta Signs For Chelsea

Chelsea FC have finally wrapped up their long-rumored pursuit of right back Cesar Azpilicueta, one day after they wrapped up their also long-rumored pursuit of Wigan winger Victor Moses. Azpilicueta will give the Blues some much needed depth at right back, and should eventually compete for a starting place.

Azpilicueta started his career at Osasuna, where he excelled as a teenager before moving on to Marseille in Ligue 1. Initially, he struggled to cement a place in Marseille’s first team, but he quickly developed into one of their best players. He had a fantastic season for Marseille in 2011-12, even if the team as a whole under-performed, and was always expected to move on during this summer transfer window.

Last season -- and for the last four years -- Chelsea have had to play the extremely disappointing Jose Bosingwa on a frequent basis. They let him go to Queens Park Rangers for good reason, and Azpilicueta should provide a massive upgrade to the right back position instantly. Branislav Ivanovic should remain first choice for the time being, but if he picks up an injury or needs to play central defense, Chelsea now have a very good secondary option.
