The headline reads more sensational than the news actually is. As a matter of standard procedure, the Red Sox put Adrian Gonzalez on waivers. The idea was to make Gonzalez, who is owed $127 million over the next six seasons, available for a potential trade once he cleared waivers. You know, just in case. It's what the Phillies did with Cliff Lee, and it's probably what the Giants did with Barry Zito. Every team does it.

The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Adrian Gonzalez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox, and the two teams will have three days to negotiate a deal ... unless the Red Sox just want to give the contract away.
And like Lee, Gonzalez didn't make it through waivers because he was claimed by the Dodgers.

The Dodgers talked with the Phillies a bit regarding Lee, and the Phillies pulled him back off waivers. That's probably what's going to happen here. The Dodgers will get three days to negotiate a trade before the Red Sox revoke the waivers.
Maybe.
The Red Sox could also just give Gonzalez to the Dodgers. Here. You take his $126 million. No backsies. The Red Sox could just start over.
Considering the $200 million deals handed out to Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder this past offseason, though, Gonzalez isn't dramatically overpaid. After a wretched start, Gonzalez looks like his old self again, and the 30-year-old has a history of health and consistent production.
