O’s Edge White Sox, Keep Pace In Wild-Card Race

The Baltimore Orioles took advantage of a walk-happy Chicago White Sox pitching staff in a 4-3 victory.

Presswire

Chicago's six-game winning streak was snapped as they fell 4-3 to the Baltimore Orioles Monday night in the first game of their four-game series.

Chicago pitchers struggled with walks all game long -- their seven walks matched the seven hits they allowed.

Orioles DH Lew Ford started the scoring in the second inning with a home run off of starter Francisco Liriano, and the offenses quieted until the sixth inning. A two-run homer from Kevin Youkilis gave the Sox the lead in the top of the sixth, but a three-walk inning in the bottom of the sixth allowed the Orioles back into it. Adam Dunn eventually ended up giving the Sox a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI single.

The walks in the sixth inning that ended up giving the Orioles their run foreshadowed the end of the game. Relief pitcher Brett Myers walked Mark Reynolds and then gave up a two-run homer to Nate McLouth, pushing in the winning run.

Baltimore's win helped keep them in the Wild Card race for the AL, tied with the Oakland A's with a 70-57 record. They sit only 3 ½ games back of the Yankees in the AL East, while the loss for Chicago leaves them only two games ahead of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.
