Report: Randy Wolf Close To Signing With O’s

Somehow the Orioles have stuck at the top of the Wild Card standings, and it looks like Randy Wolf’s coming aboard to help them stay there.

According to MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli, left-handed starting pitcher Randy Wolf, a free agent since the Brewers cut him loose last week, is on the verge of signing with the Baltimore Orioles.

Against great odds, the Orioles are tied with the Oakland A's atop the American League's Wild Card standings. They've been outscored by 45 runs, and they've struggled all season to find a four (let alone five) dependable starting pitchers. Just in the last week, Tommy Hunter (5.95 ERA) and Zach Britton (5.59) started games for the O's; so did rookie Steve Johnson, now with all of 17 major-league innings under his belt.

Just a few days ago, the Orioles acquired Joe Saunders from the Diamondbacks; he'll start for the O's Wednesday night, against the White Sox.

Now it looks like Wolf will soon be joining Saunders in the rotation. The Brewers released Wolf because of his 3-10 record and his 5.69 ERA -- no better than anyone he would replace in Baltimore -- but his fundamental performance this season falls right in line with his long career, and he’ll probably mean a slight upgrade for the O’s down the stretch.

Which is good, because they’ll need all the help they can get.
