Via Major League Baseball comes the unwelcome news that Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista will undergo wrist surgery and miss the rest of this season.

Bautista led the American League in home runs in both 2010 and ‘11. But he got off to a terrible start this season. When the 11th of May dawned, Bautista’s ledger included just five home runs and a .177 batting average. But then Bautista got on track, and by the All-Star break he sported perfectly respectable numbers.

Shortly after the break, though, Bautista went on the Disabled List with a wrist injury, suffered while swinging against the Yankees. He finally returned to the Jays' lineup last week, but didn't last even two full games before suffering an injury to the same troublesome wrist.

And now he’s finished for the season. Wrist injuries are notoriously unpredictable and sometimes linger for longer than expected. Which has to worry the Blue Jays at least a little, as they’re on the hook for $43 million after this season.
