New Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning may get all the national attention but head coach Jon Fox took some time Wednesday to discuss rookie Brock Osweiler's chances at the No. 2 job on The Dave Logan Show.
Broncos’ John Fox On The Other QB In Denver
Head coach John Fox expressed confidence in rookie Brock Osweiler Wednesday despite his mediocre preseason numbers.
“He’s got tremendous upside as far as the height, weight, speed. He’s shown some good mobility. He does have good arm strength and quarterback is probably the hardest position in football and maybe sports, so he’s coming along just fine.”
Despite Fox’s compliments, Osweiler hasn’t exactly lit up the NFL in his limited exhibition action. Out of the 14 first-year signal callers that have attempted at least 20 passes this preseason, Osweiler ranks dead last in completion percentage at a 48.1% clip (13-of-27). Additionally, the 2012 second round pick has showed an early dump off tendency, averaging only 3.8 yards per completion while not completing a single pass over 20 yards.
Still, Fox was quick to defend Osweiler Wednesday, claiming his numbers have to do with the weapons he’s working with more than anything.
“I think a lot of it with any quarterback is your supporting cast. I think we get a lot of chances at practice to evaluate all those guys and we do see how they react in games with maybe not an elite supporting cast, but I think he’s responded well.”
With all that in mind, it still seems that Fox isn't exactly 100% ready to hand the backup job to Osweiler in the early going as he concluded his interview with "Who wins that number three spot? We'll see soon." It seemed like Osweiler and Caleb Hanie were duking it out for one roster spot but now Fox's concluding statements hints that another player at a different position will lose a roster spot due to the uncertainty at the No. 2 QB position.
