The UFL is BACK.....

Getty Images

Yesterday I had the pleasure to speak with the United Football League’s official who was telling me their plans for their upcoming season. Even though they are pressed for time, they have had some recent success with a television deal. CBS Sports was interested in adding more sports entertainment to their schedule and added the UFL just last week. CBS Sports will air every game during the season and for us sports fans, MORE FOOTBALL. It will be interesting to see how the UFL can come back, but they still have support of two former head coaches Marty Schottenheimer, and Jim Fassel. So the schedule was released yesterday so I thought I would post it on here for everyone to look at.

With the UFL coming back they will start with only 4 teams, the Virginia Destroyers coached by Marty Schottenheimer, the Las Vegas Locomotives coached by Jim Fassel, and two other teams that have not assigned a coach yet with the Sacramento Mountain Lions and Omaha Nighthawks. There are several rumors who are going to coach these teams, but nothing has been confirmed yet per a league source, but a decision will be coming soon. There will only be 8 weeks of football for these teams, and then a Championship, but things are coming together quickly. They are going to have to move because the season starts on September 19th this year. It will not be an easy task, but for a league that has been in existence for a few years now, they should be able to pull it off.

Both Schottenheimer and Fassel had good things to say as they were facing each other last year in the Championship with Marty winning his first UFL Championship.

“We’re proud of what we were able to accomplish in 2011, but this is a new season and, in a lot of ways a new league,” Schottenheimer said.

Fassel is a two time winning champion in the league’s first couple years with the Las Vegas Locomotives, but this is what Jim had to say about the league.

“We’re looking forward to opening day and getting back on the field,” said Fassel, beginning his fourth season as the Locos’ coach. “We’ve created a winning tradition in Las Vegas and we want to continue that for our fans and for the new audience we’ll be reaching through CBS Sports Network.”

Coach Fassel’s team will kick off the season on Wednesday September 19th against Sacramento, and Coach Marty will kick off his season on September 21st against Omaha. If you remember a few years ago, this was a pretty decent league, they had tons of players who were on the down slope of their careers come back and play. Players like Maurice Clarett, JP Losman and Doug Gabriel were all part of the league. So without further a due here is the schedule.
