In a pivotal division matchup on Tuesday night, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-3 behind a solid pitching performance from starter Doug Fister. The victory cut Chicago's division lead to two games with two games remaining in the teams' current four-game series.

Chicago got out to an early lead, with a Dewayne Wise homer in the first inning and a Gordon Beckham homer in the third inning giving the White Sox a 2-0 lead. But Fister settled in from then on, and Detroit's bats took over from there. Austin Jackson tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-run homer, and Miguel Cabrera gave Detroit the lead two batters later with a solo homer of his own.

Alex Avila extended Detroit's lead to 4-2 with a single in the top of the eighth, and Andy Dirks added another run on top of that with a single in the same inning. Cubs CF Alejandro De Aza brought Chicago to back within two with a single in the bottom the inning, but that would be the end of the scoring for the night. Tigers closer Jose Valverde worked a scoreless ninth for his 29th save of the season.

The two teams will meet again on Wednesday night as Max Scherzer and Gavin Floyd face off, but that's only an appetizer to Thursday's main course, which features a matchup between Justin Verlander and Chris Sale.
