Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion once ranked No. 1 in the world, announced his retirement from the game of tennis on Wednesday:

Ferrero, a 32-year old from Spain, was dubbed “The Mosquito” for his speed and slight build. He was a clay court specialist, but in his prime, his game was refined enough to go all the way to the finals of the 2003 U.S. Open, where he lost to Andy Roddick.

His peak, however, was cut short by the advent of a new era in men’s tennis in the middle of the 2000’s, when bigger and more well-rounded players like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal began to dominate the major championships.
