1 Man, 228 Pitches

Exactly 50 years ago, Washington Senators right-hander Tom Cheney beat the Baltimore Orioles with a 16-inning complete game, and reportedly threw 228 pitches. He set a record, still unmatched, with 21 strikeouts.

↵Did that game kill his career? Two weeks later, Cheney pitched a really good game and beat the Red Sox. The next season, Cheney’s strikeout-to-walk ratio went up, his ERA down. But his innings went down. And after that his innings went down a lot.

↵Throwing 228 pitches in one game probably isn’t a great idea.
