The Los Angeles Dodgers gained some crucial ground in the wild card race with a 8-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

The Dodgers only sit one game back in the National League wild card race thanks to home runs by Andre Ethier and Luis Cruz. Both starters for each team had games to forget. Chris Capuano lasted 41/3 innings, giving up six hits for four runs (two earned) in the process. Joe Kelly only went five innings, giving up four hits for three earned runs.

Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday all launched home runs off of Capuano to bring the Cardinals to a 4-3 lead. But the Dodgers bullpen couldn't hold them off as Cruz clubbed a three run home run off of Edward Mujica in sixth inning as the Dodgers took a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Ethier finished the game 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Cruz was 1-4 with one run and 4 RBIs.

The Dodgers didn't gain any ground in the NL West race as the San Francisco Giants also won Friday night, but gained an important game in a crowded NL West race.
