Blue Jays Issue Statement On Yunel Escobar’s Eye Black Slur

The Blue Jays have announced that Yunel Escobar, general manager Alex Anthopoulos, manager John Farrell and coach Luis Rivera will speak at a press conference Tuesday.

The Toronto Blue Jays have issued a statement about the Yunel Escobar eye black slur controversy, stating the team does not support discrimination of any kind nor condone the message that Escobar displayed during Saturday's game. On Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, Escobar wore eye black that included a homophobic slur written across it in Spanish. The club, along with Major League Baseball, is investigating the matter.

General manager Alex Anthopoulos is expected to be joined by Escobar, manager John Farrell and coach Luis Rivera Tuesday afternoon for a press conference at Yankee Stadium.

Escobar missed Sunday’s game against Boston with flu-like symptoms. He was replaced in the lineup by Adeiny Hechavarria. The Blue Jays did not play Monday.

Escobar has appeared in 132 games this season and is batting .251/.295/.346 with nine home runs and 49 runs batted in for the last-place Blue Jays. He was acquired in 2010 from the Atlanta Braves and is a career .282/.353/.391 hitter over six seasons.
