Brett Anderson strained his right oblique while falling down awkwardly after throwing a pitch in the third inning of Wednesday's game between the Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers, according to Susan Slusser. He was replaced by reliever Pat Neshek. Anderson was making just his sixth start this season, after recovering from Tommy John surgery. He's pitched well, going 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA in 32⅔ innings.

Brett Anderson left Wednesday’s game with a right oblique strain after falling awkwardly after a pitch.
The A's were counting on Anderson in the rotation for the stretch run, as Brandon McCarthy recovers from brain surgery after being hit in the head by a line drive and Bartolo Colon was suspended last month for a PED violation. The A's entered Wednesday night's game three games behind the first-place Texas Rangers in the American League West, and one game ahead of the Baltimore Orioles for the top Wild Card spot.
