Being on trial for a MLS team is not quite like it is in much of the world. That’s especially true if you’re a player with some name recognition, who coach Bruce Arena lied about the identity of only a few days ago. So, maybe we can excuse Sweden international Christian Wilhemlsson’s wife for not entirely understanding this reality when she Tweeted out this photo that is sure to cause some headaches.

Yes, that's a photo of Wilhemsson's locker appropriately festooned with LA Galaxy marks. That might not seem like too big of a deal, but Wilhelmsson is coming off a three-year deal with Saudi Arabian giant Al-Hilal that was paying him about $4 million per season. He's still just 32 years old and played with Sweden as recently as this summer's European Championship. In other words, this is not your average MLS trialist.
Chances are, Wilhelmsson would command a pretty decent salary and would almost certainly be someone that should be paid Designated Player wages. The problem? The Galaxy are chock full of DPs and we've already seen both Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders forced to perform roster gymnastics in order to stay within the established limit.
So, here we are with the Galaxy and MLS now forced to explain why they are trialing a player that all commonsense suggests they should not be allowed to sign. Anyone got a theory?
