A Four-K Inning

Jason Berken of the Cubs struck out four batters in the second inning of today's Cubs/Reds game.

↵How is that possible? A batter reached first base on a dropped third strike (a wild pitch was recorded). Though it’s not an out, it counts as a strikeout.

↵According to Baseball Almanac, it’s the 62nd time in major-league history this oddity has been accomplished; Berken becomes the fifth Cub to do it. Check out the link; the list of pitchers who have done this includes a couple of Hall of Famers as well as answers to trivia questions. Like Berken will be in a few years.
