The Detroit Tigers were victorious over the Minnesota Twins 8-0 on Saturday and are now one game back of the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. Doug Fister tossed the shutout as he improved to 10-9 on the season.
Tigers Top Twins, One Game Back In Central
The Tigers are now one game back in the AL Central as Doug Fister shut out the Twins. Miguel Cabrera hit his 42nd home run and leads in all of the Triple Crown categories.
Miguel Cabrera hit his 42nd home run in the fourth inning and now has at least a share of the lead in all of the Triple Crown categories. Cabrera is hitting .332, with Mike Trout following him at .326. Cabrera's 42 home runs are tied with Josh Hamilton, and his 131 RBI are eight more than second-place Hamilton. Cabrera is trying to be the first player to win the Triple Crown since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.
The Tigers jumped on Minnesota starter Sam Deduno early and often. Austin Jackson led off the bottom of the first with his 15th home, and Alex Avila singled home Andy Dirks in the second to make it 2-0. Prince Fielder scored Quintin Berry with a single in the third and Delmon Young followed with a 3-run home run to make it 6-0. Andy Dirks then tripled and scored on a Deduno wild pitch before the Twins starter was mercifully removed from the game.
Meanwhile, Fister was dealing. The Twins scattered seven hits, but Fister knocked down 15 of the last 16 Minnesota hitters as the Tigers improved to 80-70.
