The Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Yankees Sunday in a matchup of postseason contenders, winning by a final score of 5-4.

The A’s, who lost the first two games of their series against New York in extra innings, were able to keep the Yankees at bay for the majority of the day.

Cliff Pennington hit a two run homer in the second inning, which followed up a run in the first off a wild pitch. Oakland took a 3-0 advantage into the bottom of the fourth inning, at which point New York put up four runs and took the lead at 4-3. The Yankees got RBIs from first baseman Nick Swisher, outfielder Raul Ibanez and shortstop Eduardo Nunez.

The A’s tied things up in the fifth and took the lead for good in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Pennington, who finished the day 3-4.

Oakland improved to 86-66 with the victory, and the Yankees fell to 88-64.
