Marlins’ clubhouse heats up with radio comments

Tuesday, Ozzie Guillen followed Heath Bell’s critical comments on the radio with one of his own.

Uh-oh. It looks like the Marlins’ long disappointing season is finally taking its toll on some nerves.

Heath Bell’s frustrated because, after losing his job as Marlins closer a couple of times earlier in the season, hasn’t regained that job despite pitching quite well since the All-Star break. Monday during a radio interview, Bell reportedly said this about (presumably) manager Ozzie Guillen: “It’s hard to respect a guy that doesn’t tell you the truth or doesn’t tell you face-to-face. There’s probably reasons why.”

Later Monday, Bell backtracked:

Bell attempted to clarify his comments Tuesday during a different interview with MLB Network Radio, claiming that he did not criticize Guillen.

“I was never criticizing Ozzie,” Bell said. “I don’t think that’s what I was doing on the radio. I was choosing my words kind of right. Apparently, I didn’t get it too right, but the thing is I respect Ozzie as a manager.”

Water under the bridge, right?

Ah, but this is Ozzie Guillen.

Tuesday, Ozzie Guillen went on the radio before the Marlins’ game against the Braves, and apparently things got a bit strange. Check out this series of tweets from Marlins beat writer Clark Spencer:

Media just kicked out of clubhouse by greg dobbs.

players, including heath bell, were listening to ozzie talk about bell on dan lebatard's radio show on 790 the ticket

Very surreal scene inside clubhouse as players listening to ozzie discuss bell situation

Ozzie asked if he respected heath bell: "as a player, yes. As a guy, i dont know

After this season, the Marlins owe Guillen around $7.5 million through 2015.

After this season, the Marlins owe $18 million through 2014.

Seems like it will be a lot easier to fire Guillen than to release or trade Bell.

Seems like someone might have to go.
