Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer has been scratched from his Friday start against the Twins because of continued problems with his right shoulder, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The 28-year-old has been battling weakness in his throwing shoulder for a little more than a week, and now is believed to have a strained deltoid muscle.

Scherzer (16-7, 3.82) was pulled from his Sept. 18 start after two innings because of discomfort in his shoulder and was later diagnosed with shoulder fatigue. An MRI revealed no structural damage, nonetheless, the right-hander was shut down for three days to allow for inflammation to subside. Scherzer returned to the mound on Sunday and faced the Twins, but labored through five innings with decreased velocity.

Rookie left-hander Drew Smyly (4-3, 4.24) will start for the Tigers on Friday in Scherzer's place. The Tigers currently stand one game up on the Chicago White Sox in the A.L. Central with just seven games remaining.
