Just when the Bountygate scandal of the New Orleans Saints was behind us, a brand-new set of bounty accusations has emerged to shake the foundation of our football-loving country to its very core.

Cameron Smith of Yahoo! Sports brings us the news that players from the Tustin Red Cobras had been receiving cash payouts from their coaches for knocking opposing players out of the game, under the guise of the bonuses being a “prize” for making the “play of the game” or somesuch. The rub is that the Red Cobras are a 10- and 11-year-old Pop Warner football team.
While this is not particularly shocking news to anyone familiar with the town of Tustin, Calif., it does raise some very tough questions. Most notably, it makes one wonder what these kids were spending the money on. Slim Jims? Snackables? Pokemons?
If the coaches had any sense, they would have made the bounty “prizes” actual prizes. You know; comic books, Fruit by the Foot, one of those Tiger handheld video games that’s all the rage these days. Don’t give kids cash for hurting someone, man. Give them treats.
