Homer Bailey throws Reds’ first no-hitter since 1988

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Homer Bailey has pitched the first no-hitter for the Reds since Tom Browning's perfect game 24 years ago, leading the Reds to a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bailey came into the ninth inning having thrown 99 pitches and allowing only two baserunners. Clint Barmes reached on an error in the third inning and Andrew McCutchen walked in the seventh.

Brock Holt led off the ninth inning pinch-hitting for catcher Rob Barajas. He quickly took two strikes before fouling the third pitch off. He then whiffed on a fastball upstairs for Bailey's 10th strikeout of the night. Michael McHenry then stepped in to pinch-hit for Tony Watson. McHenry got in an 0-2 hole himself before fouling off a few pitches. He then took one high and tight, and McHenry ended up in the dirt. Bailey then threw a slider away in the dirt hoping McHenry would chase, but he did not. After fouling another one off, McHenry popped a high fly to shallow left field.

Alex Presley was the Pirates' last chance to spoil. He ran the count to 2-1, but popped a weak flyball to shallow right field that Brandon Phillips was easily able to catch.

Homer Bailey's no-hit effort was the 15th in Reds history.
