The Detroit Tigers held just a two-game advantage over the second-place Chicago White Sox coming into Friday night's game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. The Sox might want to send Ryan Doumit a thank you card for this one, as his four RBIs led the Twins to a 4-2 victory over the Tigers.

The game was scoreless for 6½ innings as Twins starter Scott Diamond and Tigers starter Drew Smyly had themselves and old-fashioned pitchers' duel. Diamond worked an efficient 7⅓ innings, allowing only one earned run and scattering six hits. Smyly worked only 5⅓ innings in the game, but he was very effective, if not pitch-efficient. He allowed only two hits and a walk, striking out five.

The Tigers threatened in both the fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. The game was scoreless until the bottom half of the seventh when Justin Morneau reached on an error by Prince Fielder. Doumit then drove a 2-2 Phil Coke delivery into the left field seats to give the Twins a two-run lead. The Tigers tied it up in the top of the eighth with an error and home run of their own, courtesy of Austin Jackson and Omar Infante, respectively. The tie would not last long, though, as the Twins would get to Tigers' reliever Brayan Villarreal for two more runs. Doumit laced a bases-loaded double into center field to score two and give them a 4-2 advantage.

Glen Perkins closed out the ninth for the save.
