The New York Yankees fell to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-2, in a pivotal AL East battle.

New York jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out, but could only muster up two runs -- both on sacrifice flies.

Rajai Davis cut into New York’s lead in the bottom of the first, belting a solo home run off of Andy Pettitte. Davis tied the game up at 2-2 in the fifth inning, when he reached on an infield single, scoring Jeff Mathis on the play.

Toronto took the lead in the sixth, when Yunel Escobar scored on an Adeiny Hechavarria RBI double.

Blue Jays starter Ricky Romero left the game after three innings because of a knee injury. Romero gave up two runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out three.

Ichiro Suzuki had three hits, while Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher each registered two hits, but the Yankees were unable to score after the first inning.

Shawn Hill (1-0) received the win for the Blue Jays, pitching three innings in relief, while issuing two walks without allowing a hit.

Andy Pettitte (5-4) was hung with the loss, and lasted just five and two thirds innings. Pettitte surrendered three runs on five hits, while issuing three walks and striking out four.

Casey Janssen notched his 21st save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth.

The loss now draws the Baltimore Orioles within half a game of the Yankees in the AL East, and the two teams are now tied in the loss column. The Orioles play host to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.
