East-West Shrine Game 2013 practice report: Keenan Davis up, Matt Scott down

What other players on the West squad saw their draft stocks change during Shrine Game practice this week?

Mike DiNovo-US PRESSWIRE

Practices for Saturday’s East-West Shrine Game wrap up on Thursday, and more than a couple of players have changed their draft stock before the big contest. For many, this will be their first major hurdle towards making it to the next level.

Which players are rising and falling during this week of practice after Thursday? Optimum Scouting had these notes to say about players on the West.

A riser is Keenan Davis of Iowa, a 6'2, 216-pound slot receiver that won't be expected to play an outside role in an offense but could be huge on short yardage:

Some weren’t as impressed with Davis as I was, but after watching enough of him on film to “know what he is”, which is a perfect slot/seam catcher who is efficient in the short area, Davis did even more than I expected.

Another player that OS praised was cornerback Khalid Wooten out of Nevada. Wooten isn't seen as a high selection because he would most likely be a nickel corner at the next level.

Optimum Scouting’s Chad Dinkins was a fan of Wooten coming into this game, but after Wooten showed he was the best press cornerback here as well as showing the change of direction ability to mirror on the inside, and he’s become the top slot coverage cornerback at the event.

Not seeing his stock do very well this week is Arizona quarterback Matt Scott. While he has his believers, many still think that Scott won’t succeed at making throws downfield and may become an undrafted free agent:

But he lacked consistent ball placement downfield, his accuracy on timing routes on the edge were very erratic, and he didn’t get a chance to showcase his nimble-ness as a runner. Scott still intrigues, but no longer is a draft-pick lock.

The East-West Shrine Game takes place Saturday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m. EST in St. Petersburg, Fla. SB Nation’s own Alfie Crow has been covering practice this week, be sure to follow along with SB Nation and Crow on Twitter for more updates.
