Reports: Justin Upton rejected trade to Mariners

The Diamondbacks outfielder was on the verge of being shipped to Safeco Field, but ultimately decided to veto the transaction.

Justin Upton has been part of trade rumors for several years now. This offseason has been no exception.

The talented Diamondbacks outfielder has been coveted by several organizations: the Rangers, Braves and Mariners have been on the list of teams calling Arizona GM Kevin Towers, and now we know Seattle was on the verge of acquiring the 25-year-old All-Star, but he rejected the negotiation.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports that Upton, who has a $38.5 million contract with the Diamondbacks for the next three years, invoked his no-trade clause so he wouldn’t become a Mariner. Arizona would have received a huge chunk out of the Seattle farm system.

Upton, according to the report, has four teams on his no-trade list, and the Mariners are on it. He could be using this as a way of getting on to a team with a better chance of contending in 2013. But Arizona could tell Upton there’s no other option for them at the moment, and that could mean this negotiation could be revived.
