Montreal Canadiens center Scott Gomez will not take part in this week's training camp with the team and will be sent home for the remainder of the season, according to Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin.

The Canadiens center is expected to sit out this season before having his contract bought up this summer.

“Scott Gomez will not take part in the 2012-13 season and his contract will be bought out this summer,” the Canadiens GM told the media on Sunday morning.
Gomez is set to earn $5.5 million for the 2012-13 season and $4.5 million in 2013-14, in the final two years of a seven-year, $51.5 million contract originally signed with the New York Rangers. Set to count $7,357,143 against the cap next season, the contract was too much for the Canadiens to continue to carry with the reduced salary cap sitting at $64.3 million in 2013-14.
The Canadiens acquired Gomez in the summer of 2009 from the Rangers after a 16-goal, 58-point season in New York. In three seasons in Montreal, Gomez has just 21 goals in 196 games, with the center going a full 60 games between the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons without scoring a goal.
Per the new CBA, teams are allowed two compliance buyouts prior to the 2013-14 season.
