Texas football recruiting: Mack Brown, Longhorns closing in on crucial class

Texas’s recruiting class of 2013 could be crucial for Mack Brown if he wants to remain in Austin for a few more years.

USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Longhorns are in the home stretch of putting together their 2013 recruiting class, a crucial class for head coach Mack Brown. Following nine consecutive 10-win seasons from 2001-09, the Longhorns have hit a bit of a rough patch, compiling a 22-16 record over the last three years.

After a 9-4 season and third-place finish in the Big 12 in 2012, some Texas fans began to wonder out loud whether or not it was time to make a change at head coach in Austin. If Brown wants to quiet those rumblings, he must turn the program around immediately, and he can start with hauling in a top-tier recruiting class on National Signing Day.

The Longhorns currently have 13 players committed, and the following players are likely the most important pieces to Texas’s recruiting puzzle.

A’Shawn Robinson, DL: At 6’5, 304 pounds, Robinson is a defensive tackle, but he started at defensive end at the Army All-American Bowl. Robinson rates as a five-star player and is listed as the No. 3 defensive tackle and No. 1 player in the state of Texas by Rivals.

Tyrone Swoopes, QB: A quick dual-threat quarterback, Swoopes runs a 4.77 40-yard dash and is a consensus four-star player. According to Rivals, he is ranked No. 2 at his position in the class of 2013. Texas’s quarterback play has suffered in recent years, so Swoopes could have a major impact.

Kent Perkins, OL: A team can never have too many top-flight offensive linemen, and that’s exactly what Perkins is. He grades out as a consensus four-star, and according to Rivals, he is the No. 2 offensive tackle in the class of 2013. 247Sports rates Perkins as the No. 3 offensive tackle.

Darius James, OL: James is another solid offensive lineman. At 6’5, 319 pounds, he already has great size, which should improve on a college workout program. Rivals lists James as the No. 1 center, while 247 lists him as the No. 1 guard in the class.
