Ole Miss football recruiting: Rebels hope to build on 2012 with solid class

Hugh Freeze led Ole Miss to a bowl game in his first season as head coach. Now, he can build on that momentum with a strong recruiting class.

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Hugh Freeze took over the Ole Miss Rebels in 2012 and turned them into one of the most surprising teams in the SEC. After leading Ole Miss to a 7-6 record and a bowl win, Freeze is compiling one of the Rebels' best recruiting classes in years.

Without any coaching turnover this year, Freeze and his staff have been able to focus solely on building relationships with prospects. It has paid off, as Ole Miss’s class is currently ranked No. 11 by 247Sports and No. 18 by Rivals. The Rebels are in contention for some top uncommitted recruits, including Robert Nkemdiche, the top defensive end in the class, so they could shoot up the rankings before all is said and done.

Of the players currently committed to Ole Miss, the following are likely the most important.

Lavon Hooks, DT: Hooks, who has already signed, is rated as a five-star by 247Sports and a four-star by Rivals. Coming out of JUCO, he should have an immediate impact on the Rebels’ line. Hooks checks in at 6’4, 295 pounds and is regarded by 247Sports as the top JUCO player.

Kalio Moore, RB: Moore flipped his commitment from Mississippi State to Ole Miss, which is an added bonus for the Rebels. He’s 5’10, 195 pounds and listed as a four-star by Rivals and 247Sports. Moore’s speed (4.4 40-yard dash) should be a nice addition to the Rebels’ spread offense.

Jarran Reed, DT: Reed has good size at defensive tackle (6’4, 302 pounds) and he is ranked as the No. 4 JUCO player at that position by 247Sports. Along with Hooks, Reed should provide a boost to the Rebels’ line as soon as he joins the team.

Nickolas Brassell, WR: Brassell was actually a standout freshman for the Rebels in 2011 before academic issues forced him to transfer. Now, he's back in the fold for Ole Miss. Brassell, a four-star, has good size (6'1, 180 pounds) and speed (4.4 40), and he's rated as the No. 3 JUCO athlete by 247Sports.
