Jarome Iginla injury: Flames captain expected to play in season opener

The Flames captain could be back on the ice with the team soon after missing nearly half of the abridged training camp.

Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla has yet to participate in a full training camp session as he sits out with a groin injury, yet is expected to be ready to play in Sunday's season opener. According to coach Bob Hartley, Iginla could be practicing with the team sooner than later.

Per Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun:

It's tricky to put a timeline on groin injuries, but all indications are the Flames expect Iginla to be in the lineup for Sunday's season-opener against the San Jose Sharks at the Saddledome (4 p.m., Sportsnet West).

Iginla hit the ice for a skate before the full team hit the ice on Saturday, with coach Hartley stating that the team medical staff is more than comfortable with Iginla skating as he continues to rehab the groin injury. Should Iginla continue to improve, he could be back on the ice before the season starts on Sunday.

The 35-year old veteran has spent his entire career with the Flames, scoring 32 goals along with 35 assists in 82 games in 2011-2012. Iginla has not missed a game since 2006-2007, when he appeared in 70 games.

The Flames open the season on Sunday at home against the San Jose Sharks at 7 p.m. ET.
