A number of top seeds returned to the court for the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday, and as was the case in the first round, the majority of top seeds were able to avoid upsets.

Despite being hobbled by an ankle injury from the first round, No. 3 seed Serena Williams was able to breeze through to the third round with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Garbine Muguruza Blanco. Williams will face Ayumi Morita in the third round. The No. 1 seed on the women’s draw also cruised to the third round, as Victoria Azarenka knocked off Eleni Daniilidou, 6-1, 6-0.

The top seeds on the men’s side also had success on Wednesday, led by No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic. Djokovic defeated Ryan Harrison, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to a third-round matchup with Radek Stepanek. No. 3 seed Andy Murray and No. 7 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also advanced in three sets. Murray knocked off Joao Sousa, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, while Tsonga advanced past Go Soeda, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic was the only top-10 seed on the men’s side to be pushed beyond three sets. Tipsarevic needed five sets, but was able to knock off Lukas Lacko, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5.
