The Chicago Cubs added another certainty to their rotation for 2013 on Thursday. The club agreed to a one-year, $10.25 million contract with right-handed starter Matt Garza to avoid salary arbitration.

Garza will earn a $750,000 raise on his 2012 contract, likely due to his injury-shortened campaign. The righty suffered a stress fracture in his right elbow prior to the trade deadline, forcing him out of action for the entire second half of the season. Coming off a spectacular 2011, Garza was expected to be a trade chip at the deadline, but instead he posted a 4.21 FIP in 103⅔ innings for Chicago. Though he cut his H/9 from 8.5 to 7.8 and saw a slight dip in his walk rate, Garza saw his homer rate balloon from 0.6 per nine innings in 2011 to 1.3 in 2012, closer to his career rate of 1.0.
Garza will be eligible for free agency at the end of the season. He is represented by CAA Sports.
