The New York Islanders have officially suspended defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky, as he continues to remain in Europe while attending to his son's health issues, according to the team.

The veteran defenseman continues to remain in the KHL, yet has stated he will report to the Islanders after a few more weeks tendign to his ailing son.

Visnovsky stated earlier this week that he would return after a few weeks to the NHL, meaning that the suspension is likely a formality for the Islanders to prepare the team’s 23-player roster for the start of the season.
Visnovsky was traded to the Islanders in the summer of 2012 from the Anaheim Ducks and initially attempted to block the trade, although the move was upheld by an arbitrator. Visnovsky went to the KHL to play with Slovan Bratislava during the NHL lockout, and his initial refusal to return to North America sparked a war of words between the Russian hockey league and the NHL.
The KHL released a statement, however, stating that it would adhere to the memorandum of understanding between the leagues and would not allow Visnovsky to play for Slovan without a waiver from the NHL and the Islanders
