Toronto Maple Leafs veteran center Tim Connolly has cleared waivers on Friday and will start the season with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

Maple Leafs center Tim Connolly has cleared waivers on Friday, along with both Calgary Flames backup netminders.

Connolly was signed by the Maple Leafs to a two-year, $9.5 million contract in 2011 and had just 13 goals and 23 assists in 70 games with Toronto last season. Connolly is expected to likely re-join the Maple Leafs at some point in the shortened 2013 season, depending on whether injuries dictate the need for the callup. According to the new CBA, re-entry waivers are no longer required.
James Wright was claimed off waivers from the Florida Panthers by the Winnipeg Jets, while the New York Islanders claimed Brian Strait from the Pittsburgh Penguins. According to McKenzie, all other players cleared waivers from Thursday, including Calgary Flames goaltenders Henrik Karlsson and Leland Irving.
Placed on waivers on Friday were Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Curtis McElhinney, New Jersey Devils forward Bobby Butler, and St. Louis Blues forward Chris Porter.
