Marlins and Mariners reportedly discussed Stanton

Seattle needs offense, while Miami could use all the young pitching it can get. Would the Marlins be tempted to part ways with their biggest star at the moment?

The Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins have discussed the possibility of trading slugging outfielder Giancarlo Stanton to Safeco Field, according to a report by Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. However, his sources say a deal is unlikely at the moment.

It's true that the Marlins, a team that recently made a major deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, have no other high-profile names left on the roster other than Stanton. However, the Mariners seem to possess depth on their farm system when it comes to pitching prospects, which could tempt the Marlins.

On the other hand, Seattle is in dire need of a slugger, after experiencing the worst offense in the American League last year. They have traded for Kendrys Morales and have also brought veterans Jason Bay and Raul Ibañez, but that is certainly not enough when it comes to comparing their lineup to division rivals such as the Angels, which brought in free agent Josh Hamilton.

Stanton is one of the most intriguing players in baseball these days, with 93 career homers on his player card at age 23. And while the Marlins have assured they are not shopping Stanton, that doesn’t mean they would not listen to offers for him.
