A better script couldn’t have been written, as three of the few remaining players from the 1994-1995 shortened season now lead the league in scoring -- albeit after just one night.
Jaromir Jagr, 40, made his Dallas Stars debut on Saturday night, scoring two goals and adding two more assists in Stars' 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. Jagr, who returned to the NHL in 2011-2012 after three seasons in the KHL, now has 667 goals and is just one tally away from breaking into the top ten in all-time scoring history, moving him into a tie with Luc Robitaille.
Teemu Selanne, at 42 and had been on the edge of retirement for three years now, added two goals and two assists of his own in the Anaheim Ducks' 7-3 dismantling of the Vancouver Canucks. Selanne now has 663 career goals and should move into the top ten all-time scoring as well at some point this season.
Kovalev signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers just days before the start of the season, adding one goal and two assists in the 5-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Stars will be right back on the ice Sunday night in Minnesota, while the Ducks have a day off before facing the Calgary Flames on Monday night.
