Tim Brown: Raiders coach Bill Callahan helped Jon Gruden win Super Bowl

After 10 years, former Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown still blames then-head coach Bill Callahan for Oakland’s loss in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Former Oakland Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown is still upset at former head coach Bill Callahan for Oakland's 48-21 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII. Judging by an interview he gave to Sirius XM NFL Radio, the Hall-of-Fame finalist seems to believe Callahan sabotaged the Raiders in that game.

“We all called it sabotage ... because Callahan and [Tampa Bay coach Jon] Gruden were good friends,” Brown said. “And Callahan had a big problem with the Raiders, you know, hated the Raiders. You know, only came because Gruden made him come.”

Brown said Callahan changed the Raiders’ offensive plan two days before the game, basically insinuating that the former coach threw the game against his former mentor. Callahan served as offensive coordinator under Gruden in Oakland from 1998-2001.

Whether or not Callahan sabotaged the Raiders’ offense, it certainly fell flat against the Buccaneers’ defense. Oakland gained just 269 yards and 11 first downs. However, the Raiders’ defense didn’t exactly show up, either, allowing Tampa Bay to gain 365 yards and 24 first downs.

While Brown admits it’s tough to prove Callahan sabotaged his team, he still has his suspicions:

“That can be my opinion, but I can’t say for a fact that that’s what his plan was, to sabotage the Super Bowl. He hated the Raiders so much that he would sabotage the Super Bowl so his friend can win the Super Bowl. That’s hard to say, because you can’t prove it.”
