Superstar snowboarder Shaun White overcame a rough set of early runs in the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle elimination round to finish in second place in the SuperPipe event on Thursday night at the 2013 Winter X-Games in Aspen, Colo.

White followed up an underwhelming opening run in the Slopestyle event with a disastrous second turn, but his score of 67.33 on the first try was good enough to get him into the Slopestyle finals. Later, in the SuperPipe event, White scored an 87 on his first run, finishing behind only Iouri Podladtchikov, whose best run earned a score of 87.33, for the best performance of the SuperPipe qualifier.

To kick off the day, U.S. skier David Wise topped all qualifiers in the Men’s Ski SuperPipe event, scoring a 92 on his second turn after posting a respectable 87 on his initial run.

In the nightcap, the Snowmobile Freestyle event produced the only medal winners of the opening day of the Games, with American Levi LaVallee coming away with the gold. Joe Parsons took home the silver and Justin Hoyer settled for the bronze, while the Moore brothers, Caleb and Colten, both suffered heinous wrecks that left the latter hospitalized.

Coverage of Day 2 of the X-Games begins at 3 p.m. ET on Friday.
