Philadelphia Flyers winger Scott Hartnell will miss four to eight weeks with a broken foot, general manager Paul Holmgren told the media on Thursday. Hartnell broke the fourth metatarsal on his left foot when he was hit by a shot from teammate Kimmo Timmonen in a loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Flyers, already struggling to score goals this season, lost leading scoring Scott Hartnell for 4-8 weeks with a broken foot.

Hartnell, the Flyers' leading goal-scorer last season with 37 tallies on the year, had become a mainstay on the top line next to center Claude Giroux. With Hartnell out, Matt Read and Wayne Simmonds stepped up to the first line in the 2-1 win over the New York Rangers.
With Hartnell out for a good chunk of the 48-game season, the Flyers signed veteran winger Mike Knuble to a one-year contract. Knuble played three seasons with the Flyers from 2006 to 2009, putting up 72 points in 82 games in 2007-2008. The 40-year old veteran had just six goals and 12 assists last season with the Washington Capitals, after eight straight seasons with more than 20 goals.
