Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf could be in hot water after a nasty hit on New York Islanders center John Tavares, who crumpled to the ice after a hit into the boards with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Tavares was hit face-first into the boards and was slow to get up, while Phaneuf committed a turnover in his own zone that led directly to a Matt Moulson goal.

The Islanders would go on to win the game, 7-4.

Matt Carkner jumped into the fray following the goal to back up his fallen teammate, and was hit with a roughing minor when Phaneuf declined to drop the gloves.

Could Phaneuf face disciplinary procedures by the NHL? The Maple Leafs defenseman has been in hot water before, escaping a possible suspension after being ejected from a game in Dec. 2011 for boarding Buffalo Sabres forward Zack Kassian.

Phaneuf was not penalized in the game for the hit.
