Abdouleye Soulama, Burkina Faso’s goalkeeper, was sent off in the second half for deliberately handling the ball outside of the box, but it didn’t hurt them at all. They scored twice after the sending off, cruising to a 3-0 win.
Adane Girma and Asrat Megersa, Ethiopia’s starting central midfielders, both had to be removed due to injury in the first half of the match. Girma’s substitution came in the 11th minute, and Ethiopia never appeared to stand a chance of establishing a rhythm after his exit. Alain Traore scored the opening goal in the 34th minute, punching in a cross by Charles Kabore just one minute after he had a shot cleared off the line, and Burkina Faso entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
