Los Angeles Kings defenseman Matt Greene is expected to miss at least eight weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back, the team announced on Friday.

The veteran defenseman is expected to miss at least two months after being injured in the season opener.

Greene was injured during the season opener for the Kings last Saturday, when it was expected he could miss the rest of the season altogether. As it stands, he’ll miss most of the 2013 season and could return in time for postseason.
The 29-year old defenseman, originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2002 out of the University of North Dakota, is currently in his fifth season with the Kings. Greene appeared in 82 games last season for the Kings, scoring a career-high four goals and 15 points, and was a key part of the team's run to the Stanley Cup Finals, adding two goals and four assists in 20 playoff games.
The defending Cup-champion Kings have opened the season 0-2-1 and will face the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night.
