Shangahi Bobby, sent to post at even money odds, went straight to the lead after breaking from the starting gate and set solid fractions through the first three-quarters of a mile. Itsmyluckyday, the co-second choice at 9/2, stalked the pace down down the backstretch, moved up to challenge Shanghai Bobby on the far turn, and then put away the favorite in mid-stretch on his way to the victory. Long shot Clearly Now finished third, but was well back of the top two. Another huge long shot, Joshua’s Comprise, rounded out the top four and keyed a $0.10 superfecta that paid a very nice $519.69.
Itsmyluckyday is a 3-year-old colt by Lawyer Ron out of a Doneraile Court mare (Viva La Slew), trained by Edward Plesa Jr. and ridden by Elvis Trujillo. He earns 10 points under the official Road to the Kentucky Derby qualification system.
Two races prior to the Holy Bull, odds-on favorite Kauai Katie rolled to a gate-to-wire victory in the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes. The victory is Kauai Katie’s fourth graded stakes victory and her fifth win in six lifetime starts.
