The Montreal Canadiens have announced that rookie Alex Galchenyuk will remain with the NHL team, as the deadline for sending players back to the juniors approached. Forward Brendan Gallagher will also remain with the team.

Because of the shortened season, rookie players had five games to play before their entry-level contract would kick in. Tuesday's game against the Winnipeg Jets will be the fifth this season for Galchenyuk. The five-game rule does not apply to Gallagher.

Galchenyuk, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 draft, missed all but two regular season games with the Sarnia Sting last season because of a knee injury. He returned to play six games in the postseason, and had 27 goals and 61 points in 33 games with Sarnia this season. Through four games with Montreal, Galchenyuk has registered a goal and two assists.

Drafted in the fifth round by Montreal in 2010, Gallagher had 10 goals and 10 assists in 36 games in the AHL during the lockout and has a goal and an assist in three games with Montreal this season.
