Alex Leo of Reuters.com took it upon herself to try to assemble a master list of which professional sports teams are featured in the most movies. Not just passing references, mind you. She lays down some ground rules:
The big list of pro sports teams in movies
Which professional sports teams are in the most movies? The answer probably won’t surprise you.

1) The Mighty Ducks do NOT count. The sports team came after the movie and was created by the Disney corporation. Fail.
2) The movie doesn’t have to be about the team but it has to prominently feature it and the team has to play a role in the plot. This means "Silver Linings Playbook" counts for the Eagles and "Fever Pitch" counts for the Red Sox.
3) Featuring the stadium is not the same as featuring the team. "The Town" doesn’t count as trying to rob Fenway has little to do with The Red Sox.
4) This list doesn’t include documentaries.
Not surprisingly, the Yankees lead all sports teams with a whopping 10 movies that fit the criteria. Surprisingly, the Eagles lead all football teams with just two movies. It appears that most of the football movies that get made are about make-believe teams. You know; because of licensing.
The list isn't perfect (for example, Cobb is listed under the Yankees but not under the Tigers (but I haven't seen Cobb so maybe it just deals with Ty Cobb being a giant racist and not the baseball team he played for)), but she is crowd-sourcing to try to make the list exhaustive. So go check out the list and make a comment. Are there gross oversights? Are there THREE hockey movies?! Let her know!
