Garrett McNamara may have just pulled off what was once thought to be impossible when he successfully surfed what is thought to be a 100-foot wave.

That’s Garrett McNamara, riding what is believed to be a 100-foot wave on Monday, off the coast of Portugal. If verified, it would set a new Guinness World Record (McNamara originally set the mark by surfing a 78-foot wave in 2011; video of that ride).
The claim, however, has yet to be verified. Measuring a wave’s precise height is quite difficult and the only evidence is strictly visual. McNamara’s record-breaking 2011 wave, also in Nazare, became a source of controversy when it was originally estimated to be about 90 feet. It was brought down to 78 feet upon closer inspection, just one foot higher than the previous record holder, Mike Parson.
