Caleb Moore died on Thursday after suffering a terrible snowmobile crash at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo., on Jan. 24. It is the first death in the 17-year history of the Winter X Games.

Moore, 25, crashed while attempting a backflip during the snowmobile freestyle final in which he was thrown to the ground prior to the snowmobile landing on him. Moore initially walked away from the accident, but while being evaluated for the concussion he suffered, doctors discovered bleeding on Moore’s heart and performed emergency surgery. According to a family spokesman, he suffered a “brain complication” on Sunday.

Prior to the race, Moore told the New York Times that he guessed he had had 10 concussions in his life. Moore won the silver medal for best trick at the 2011 Winter X Games and took home the bronze medal in the freestyle competition that year.

Moore’s brother, Colten, suffered a separated pelvis during his freestyle run on Thursday. Despite the accidents and Moore’s death, athletes contend that the sport is the safest it has ever been.
