Donald Driver, it’s been quite a trip

Donald Driver is retiring and we couldn’t let the occasion pass without a few words of admiration.

ASHLAND, Wis. — Donald Driver can finally take his foot off the pedal and enjoy the ride. Life in the NFL moves at a hundred miles an hour these days, and eventually even the speedsters have to switch gears. No road lasts forever.

But it’s been a hell of a trip, hasn’t it?

“I would never have expected it, being a seventh-round pick, and a lot of people telling you that you weren’t going to make the team,” Driver once said. “To get that opportunity to pass all the greats that have played before me, it’s an honor just to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys.”

He wasn’t always the biggest, or the strongest, or even the fastest.

But nobody had a motor like ol’ no. 80. Now it’s time shut her down.

“Someone is always going to be able to tell my kids that their dad was a great football player,” Driver said as he explained his retirement. “But no one will be able to tell my kids that their dad was a great dad and a great husband, so I have to be able to show them that.”

That’s right, Donald is setting the GPS to HOME.

Maybe he still has something left in the tank, but he thinks it’s time for football to take a back seat. Looks like this Driver’s definitely guilty of DWI -- Doing What’s Important.

Good for him.

Great for him.

Take a left on Easy Street, Mr. Driver. It’s time to let your teammates take the wheel.

We’ll see you when you make your road trip to Canton.
