Super Bowl 2013: Terrell Suggs would welcome gay teammate

Chris Culliver’s comments on the possibility of an openly gay teammate quickly became the biggest story of Super Bowl week. Other players have now had an opportunity to give their take on the situation.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers made headlines in a way that they weren't anticipating when cornerback Chris Culliver said he would not want an openly gay teammate. That has become the story of the week, and Ravens' linebacker Terrell Suggs was asked what he would think of gay teammate on Thursday. His response was much more positive, via Pro Football Talk:

Asked if he would have a problem with a gay teammate, Suggs answered, “Absolutely not.” Suggs then added that the rest of the team would welcome a gay teammate as well.

The Super Bowl provides far too many opportunities for players to make gaffes, or show their true colors. Culliver backtracked on his comments later, but still was offering up a similar excuse, saying that players are put in tough situations.

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh noted that the Culliver’s comments did not represent how the team feels on the whole. His teammates defended his character, many saying they are glad to have the corner on the team.

Suggs and his Baltimore teammates made the right comments today, and that will give them the public relations boost as the actual football game approaches.
