Bradley vs Marquez: ‘Irish’ Seanie Monaghan stops Anthony Smith in third round

Seanie Monaghan dominated en route to getting a stoppage win in the first fight of the Timothy Bradley vs Juan Manuel Marquez pay-per-view card.

“Irish” Seanie Monaghan came into his fight with Anthony Smith as a fan favorite in the northeast and one of the best draws in the New York area. Top Rank’s decision to sign him to their stable of fighters was one that was built on the hope that he could be used to assist in bringing in a good fanbase to boost live gates in New York as well as bringing in some of his fans to pay-per-views where they may have been on the fence. Remember, even just 10,000 pay-per-view buys at $60 a pop is $600,000 (with a good chunk, of course, going to the providers).

Smith was in the bout as an opponent, Top Rank obviously not willing to risk a draw in a big test on his first pay-per-view appearance under their banner.

Monaghan treated Smith like the opponent he was, getting through Smith’s initial attempt to make a dent in the first round and bludgeoning him in rounds two and three to force a referee stoppage.

There’s not much to write about a fight that goes exactly as one would expect. Monaghan busted up Smith with pretty much anything he wanted over the course of the fight before the ref had no other option but to waive the fight off to save Smith any further punishment.

The stoppage was the 12th KO of Monaghan’s career as he improved to 19-0 while Smith falls to 14-2, 10 KO.
