You can’t spell “obstruction” without “intro to Cubs.”
World Series Game 4 live chat: Red Sox vs. Cardinals

John Autin [12:06 AM]:
Mets fans will blame Carlos for taking strike one.
Grant Brisbee [12:04 AM]:

Grant Brisbee [12:04 AM]:
Good night, everyone. May your workday tomorrow not involve you looking at a co-worker like this:
WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays [11:57 PM]:
Red Sox Losses Due To Clownballery: 2, Cardinals Losses Due To Clownballery: 2
Brendan O’Neil [11:57 PM]:
Gotta wonder if Papi is locked in because he will walk if they win it all
Grant Brisbee [11:55 PM]:
WHY ARE YOU TAKING A SECONDARY LEAD WHEN YOU AREN’T THE TYING RUN?
Grant Brisbee [11:55 PM]:

WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays [11:54 PM]:
Look how sad you’ve made Carlos Beltran! LOOK AT HIM!
Bill Hanstock [11:54 PM]:
that was a better game tonight! take it easy everyone!
Grant Brisbee [11:54 PM]:
That’s how you do commentary in 140 characters while doing nothing but reciting facts.
Grant Brisbee [11:54 PM]:
Arguably the greatest hitter in postseason history finished the game standing in the batter's box because a rookie got picked off at first.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 28, 2013
John Autin [11:52 PM]:
And now we’ve seen every mistake in the book!
socklessmoejohnson [11:52 PM]:
Cardinals just got 2013 White Sox’d
Grant Brisbee [11:52 PM]:
(Not really.) (jeeeeez)
WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays [11:52 PM]:
There’s the zany ending we knew was coming!

troymccluresf [11:52 PM]:
WHOA
hotwater2 [11:52 PM]:
Gee, Craig could have done that.
Grant Brisbee [11:51 PM]:
In an alternate universe, Carpenter hits that thing 440 feet. That was a bad pitch.
Mirror [11:50 PM]:
I thought Bogeart looked like he thought he had plenty of time so he decided to make a “nice easy throw…” – then didn’t throw naturally.
hotwater2 [11:50 PM]:
and…. the feeling is gone
Grant Brisbee [11:49 PM]:
Yeah, this has a feeling.
Bill Hanstock [11:49 PM]:
here we gooooooo
Bill Hanstock [11:48 PM]:
some strike zone!
hotwater2 [11:47 PM]:
This is a genius move here, not letting Axford bat.
Bill Hanstock [11:45 PM]:
who’s ready for a last-strike cardinals walk-off?!
Grant Brisbee [11:34 PM]:

Bill Hanstock [11:33 PM]:
@WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays i approve this joke; grant doesn’t get it
WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays [11:32 PM]:
@Grant Brisbee Wait, no, that’s J’on J’ay. My bad.
WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays [11:32 PM]:
@Grant Brisbee … “Manhunter.”
Charlie Gebow [11:32 PM]:
“That was pitch number 15 for John Lackey; his effectiveness may start slipping, as he holds opposing hitters to a .214 average in the first 15 pitches but they hit .256 off him after that.”
Charlie Gebow [11:32 PM]:
THANKS SCOUT
Bill Hanstock [11:31 PM]:
jon jay will be in tampa next week
Charlie Gebow [11:31 PM]:
@Grant Brisbee It defcinitely has not been good
Grant Brisbee [11:31 PM]:
Also, Jon Jay, future ___. (Fill in the blank. Because it ain’t going to be Cardinal.)
John Autin [11:30 PM]:
Not the pitch you want to attack on 2-0.
truffleshuffle [11:30 PM]:
@cardinaliscardinalis Ballsy! Gonna take some good pitches to get out of this mess.
Grant Brisbee [11:30 PM]:
Wondering if anyone else is noticing the Red Sox’ defense being bad.
WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays [11:30 PM]:
If Napoli comes off the bag to glove that, he had about an hour to get back with Molina running.
Grant Brisbee [11:29 PM]:
Wow. Tough play for Xander, but pretty poor timing for that kind of error. Need to save those for blowouts.
Bill Hanstock [11:28 PM]:
welp
Bill Hanstock [11:27 PM]:
m’adams almost had an infield hit
cardinaliscardinalis [11:26 PM]:
@truffleshuffle Throw day, he’s fine
truffleshuffle [11:26 PM]:
Does this make it unlikely that Lackey starts again this series?
John Autin [11:25 PM]:
Any idea at all on Lackey over Tazawa?
Bill Hanstock [11:24 PM]:
so farrell said today that he’d use koji for more than three outs if necessary tonight. and goes to lackey
Grant Brisbee [11:23 PM]:
Would have been Brandon Workman, but he threw to one too many batters in Game 3.
John Autin [11:23 PM]:
@Bill Hanstock OK, Papi’s 10 times on base shy of Bonds’s record of 22.
Grant Brisbee [11:23 PM]:
John Lackey, middle reliever, is actually happening.
cardinaliscardinalis [11:17 PM]:
Mujica up, because…..Matheny doesn’t think the Cardinals will win?
Bill Hanstock [11:16 PM]:
some insider info
Bill Hanstock [11:16 PM]:
mlb scout tells me axford is having location issues
Bill Hanstock [11:15 PM]:
haha
Grant Brisbee [11:15 PM]:
Not going to lie — John Lackey, middle reliever, interests me.
Bill Hanstock [11:15 PM]:
ortiz isn’t going to get six more hits
John Autin [11:13 PM]:
Papi now 6 hits from new WS record.
Charlie Gebow [11:12 PM]:
J.R. Wolf [11:10 PM]:
Now, Ortiz – he is theatrical
J.R. Wolf [11:09 PM]:
&clefo Or maybe Noh Theater.
Charlie Gebow [11:06 PM]:
@J.R. Wolf Early 20th Century Minimalist type theater, maybe
J.R. Wolf [11:04 PM]:
Not much theater there
John Autin [11:00 PM]:
A reprise of Holliday v. Tazawa — should be great theater!
J.R. Wolf [10:59 PM]:

Charlie Gebow [10:58 PM]:

Bill Hanstock [10:58 PM]:
who knew it was a bad idea to bring in the guy with a 54.00 era
J.R. Wolf [10:58 PM]:
The Red Sox are going to mess around and lose this one too
Grant Brisbee [10:57 PM]:
Decent risk to send Robinson, paid off. He almost pulled a Jeremy Giambi, though.

Grant Brisbee [10:26 PM]:
Insta-bat-flip. And well-deserved.
Grant Brisbee [10:26 PM]:

Grant Brisbee [10:25 PM]:
@GBSimons Funny thing is that when I was typing it, I was thinking about that exact same situation, where Lynn isn’t the one who gives the runs up.
GBSimons [10:24 PM]:
“Baseless prediction” Grant says. Yeah, right. He’s a seer.
socklessmoejohnson [10:24 PM]:
Now that’s a World Series moment right there
Gerald Gillespie [10:24 PM]:
that wasn’t a ground ball. what happened?!
Bill Hanstock [10:24 PM]:
grant was right about two runs off lynn this inning! i get to eat another cookie!
Grant Brisbee [10:24 PM]:
That ball was crushed, just crushed.
Grant Brisbee [10:23 PM]:

Bill Hanstock [10:23 PM]:
are you kidding me
GBSimons [10:23 PM]:
Matheny totally screwed that one.
Charlie Gebow [10:23 PM]:
That ended well
4-6-3 [10:23 PM]:
@Bill Hanstock Counterpoint. Erm.
Gerald Gillespie [10:23 PM]:
@rob i’d rather see SU2C than rejoin 2-1 count after commercial break
Grant Brisbee [10:21 PM]:

Gerald Gillespie [10:19 PM]:
of course, everything else would have happened the same way
Gerald Gillespie [10:19 PM]:
if Nava wasn’t #2 it would’ve been a lot harder to pitch around ortiz
Bill Hanstock [10:19 PM]:
counterpoint, y’all: it’s jonny gomes
GBSimons [10:19 PM]:
Oops, Grant types faster than I do.
Grant Brisbee [10:18 PM]:

cardinaliscardinalis [10:18 PM]:
Matheny was jealous of all the John Farrell criticism
GBSimons [10:18 PM]:
Hey, let’s put the go-ahead runner in scoring position! Brilliant.
Grant Brisbee [10:18 PM]:
Would have rather had Choate attempt to get Ortiz out rather than put the lead run in scoring position.
troymccluresf [10:17 PM]:
@Grant Brisbee “Usury”? You must have made up a word that doesn’t exist.
Bill Hanstock [10:17 PM]:
david ortiz is batting .700 in the world series
hotwater2 [10:16 PM]:
this is wrong
Gerald Gillespie [10:16 PM]:
lol McCarver just pwned Buck. Tough hops be damned!
GBSimons [10:16 PM]:
Where’s Choate?!?!?!?
Rob Neyer [10:16 PM]:
Yeah, so I really have no idea why Lynn’s still in there. Recipe for disaster.
Grant Brisbee [10:16 PM]:
Ortiz vs. Lynn? I wouldn’t let it happen.

The Angels need to sign Ellsbury (8 years) and Beltran (4 years).
Gerald Gillespie [10:13 PM]:
Maybe if Pedy and Ortiz were 2 and 3 they would
hotwater2 [10:13 PM]:
(nor next)
hotwater2 [10:13 PM]:
I hope Lynn doesn’t face Ortiz this inning
Bill Hanstock [10:12 PM]:
@Grant Brisbee there’s no way
Grant Brisbee [10:12 PM]:
Baseless prediction: Red Sox score at least two against Lynn this inning.
GBSimons [10:11 PM]:
Yep, those 78-84 Angels had too many good players.
GBSimons [10:10 PM]:
@Rob – I understand, “Boo, cancer!” but how about doing it during the opening ceremonies?
Grant Brisbee [10:10 PM]:
Whoops. Not sure how that got here.

Rob Neyer [10:09 PM]:
Any chance the new commissioner will do something about non-baseball delays during World Series games?
Grant Brisbee [10:09 PM]:
@gaylordp hahaha
Gerald Gillespie [10:05 PM]:
yeah Nava would have made that look boring. If Sox win i hope Ferrell doesn’t think this is a new streak for Gomes
gaylordp [10:05 PM]:

@robneyer True story, my five-year-old refuses to stay in her bed all night. So she’ll amble in about 2:00 and crawl into our bed. But she kicks. All night. She’s gotten me in the musket and bandoliers at least a dozen times. Once bad enough to put me on the DL. Not that you asked.
4-6-3 [9:40 PM]:

@Gerald Gillespie Well, yeah, I wrote that and then he’s been meatbally since. I jinxed him I guess.
Gerald Gillespie [9:10 PM]:

4-6-3 [9:09 PM]:
Buchholz control just isn’t good. But he’s been surprisingly effective so far.
Rob Neyer [9:09 PM]:
In Joe Buck’s world, every time a major leaguer misses a grounder, the ball took a bad hop.
4-6-3 [9:08 PM]:
Woo Ellsbury.
Charlie Gebow [9:07 PM]:
I wonder if you were to give Umpires Sodium Pentathol, how many would admit that they call strike threes when guys walk to first before the call just to be a dick about it? (Not saying it applied there, just a general thought)
socklessmoejohnson [9:06 PM]:
YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHhhhhhhhoooooooooooooooooooh
WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays [9:06 PM]:
@robneyer "You want us to take a perfectly clear rule and introduce more umpire judgement calls and even the faintest chance that the defense could benefit from obstructing the runner? Oh, yeah, we’ll get right on that.
Grant Brisbee [9:05 PM]:
@Gerald Gillespie Ha ha. Seriously, fix the HBP silliness before clamoring for rule changes.
Gerald Gillespie [9:03 PM]:
i wouldn’t mind adding “attempt to get out of the way” as long as it’s enforced like HBPs
Rob Neyer [9:02 PM]:
I’ll be shocked if there’s a significant change to the obstruction rule. Weren’t people calling for change to Infield Fly Rule last fall? What happened to that?
WhereThere’sAWillieThere’sAMays [9:00 PM]:
I think Torre saying “we’ll look at it” should be read as “we’ll say what we need to until this blows over.” There’s NO WAY that rule gets changed.
hotwater2 [9:00 PM]:
@Gerald Gillespie My son just made a great point- taking into account intent, means adding an incentive to obstruct.

@4-6-3 OWAH SPORTS PAIN IS BETTAH THAN YOUAH SPORS PAIN

oh great…now the umpires are going to try to figure out intent? That’ll show up real well on replay
4-6-3 [8:57 PM]:
Apparently when a rule is applied to Red Sox’ detriment, it’s time to review it.
4-6-3 [8:54 PM]:
@robneyer He’s also batting 0.091 in the post so far, IIRC.
Rob Neyer [8:54 PM]:
just for the record and stuff, the guy Buck just said is “in there for his defense” posted a 111 OPS+ this season.
4-6-3 [8:53 PM]:
@robneyer Yeah. He’s giving Buchholz too much help.
Grant Brisbee [8:53 PM]:
Can’t sleep on the possibility that Buchholz’s fastball will pick up a couple feet as he stretches out.
Gerald Gillespie [8:53 PM]:
ball 4 to Jay looked a lot like ball 4 to Jay the other night. he rarely walks so Sox pitchers missing that put “go to” spot on him?
Rob Neyer [8:52 PM]:
Hey Descalso, I know it sucks but just take the walk!
4-6-3 [8:47 PM]:
The 3-0 and 3-1 were two good fastballs. I guess I can’t count out Buchholz yet.
4-6-3 [8:45 PM]:
that first pitch to Jay mysteriously had a 100 nasty factor

4-6-3 [8:32 PM]:
Nice stretch, Oritz
Grant Brisbee [8:30 PM]:
Reminder that while everyone’s giddy about Michael Wacha being the comp pick the Cards got for Pujols, don’t forget that Buchholz is the guy the Red Sox got for Pedro. And it wasn’t an easy decision to let Pedro go after 2004. But it really, really worked out.
4-6-3 [8:30 PM]:
@Clefo More like Clay Zitholz
Charlie Gebow [8:28 PM]:
Moar like Clay Buch-slowz… wait.
Grant Brisbee [8:27 PM]:
88 m.p.h? Release the Dempster.
4-6-3 [8:25 PM]:
@robneyer Poor McCarver. He wins the Frick and then immediately can’t get any respect. Not saying he’s due respect, but it’s unfortunate.
4-6-3 [8:23 PM]:
@Grant Brisbee Good read, thanks Grant. I hadn’t thought about the slowness thing. Red Sox games are slow. WS games are slow. Now a pitcher working slow on purpose. This will likely be the slowest game I’ve ever watched.
Grant Brisbee [8:22 PM]:
@robneyer “It’s not unwelcome for the runner to take his own path, but the fielder’s decision to be within the pathway of where the runner could go, made the judgment call an easy judgement to call for Jim Joyce.”
Redbird-4-Life [8:22 PM]:
Did anyone hear that explanation?
Rob Neyer [8:21 PM]:
McCarver’s talking about the obstruction rule. Sounds like a guy who should retire very, very soon.
Rob Neyer [8:20 PM]:
Yeah, Lynn’s platoon is about as big as you’ll see for a starting pitcher.
Grant Brisbee [8:20 PM]:
Hard to take Ortiz out when Lynn is almost like a ROOGY.
Grant Brisbee [8:19 PM]:
Also, 4-6-3, there’s this:
LHBs have a .350 wOBA off Lance Lynn in his career; RHBs, .278. With Gomes behind Ortiz, semi-intentional walks are probably in order.
— David Cameron (@DCameronFG) October 28, 2013
Grant Brisbee [8:18 PM]:
@4-6-3 The lede to Tim Britton’s piece earlier in the week was golden: “Clay Buchholz is healthy…enough.” http://www.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox/content/20131023-buchholz-says-he-expects-to-start-game-four-on-sunday-red-sox-still-have-concerns.ece
4-6-3 [8:14 PM]:
ESPN was sure playing up the tired arm thing. They had Schilling saying that Buchholz looked like he was fully warmed up but only throwing 70mph.
Grant Brisbee [8:13 PM]:
@GBSimons It’s going to be a completely boring 8-2 game with a baker’s dozen of walks.
GBSimons [8:12 PM]:
I wonder what tonight’s zaniness will be. A manager tossed, a bench-clearing brawl, balks, catcher’s interference, a Chesterfield sofa suddenly appearing in the outfield with two cavemen on it – one with a bone in his beard? All of the above?
4-6-3 [8:11 PM]:
@Grant Brisbee Yeah, his bat is really important. Maybe you just have to start him and hope you can pull him early if the score isn’t close.
Grant Brisbee [8:09 PM]:
@4-6-3 So tough to take him out, though. Ortiz at 80 percent is probably better than the alternative.
4-6-3 [8:06 PM]:
Starting Ortiz at 1B is questionable given how tired he looks playing D. They should break this 3-game run up with a partial day off for him if they want to use him tomorrow and after.
4-6-3 [8:05 PM]:
I’ll say something stupid, but I’ll say it early so I seem smart if it is right.
Rob Neyer [8:05 PM]:
Yeah. Kinda a shame!
